Description:
An excellent original and early example of an early Winchester Model 1895 'Flatside' sporting rifle in .30-40 Krag caliber ( .30 US) with 28" round barrel and the extra features of a factory mounted early Lyman No 21 receiver sight intended for Winchester 1895 rifles. The rifle barrel has a factory blank in the rear sight dovetail and no evidence that a standard barrel mounted open sight was ever on this rifl. This rifle also has factory shotgun butt with steel buttplate. This rifle's three digit serial number indicates it was built in the first months of 1896
Of the 420,000 Model 1895 Winchester rifles produced less than 5,000 were built with 'flatside' frames in 1895-1896. Given the short duration of 'Flatside' model production few will be found with any 'extra' features. Most of these first Model '95 rifles saw considerable use making an excellent original example something of a rarity.
CONDITION: This rifle retains 97%+ strong original blued finish on its receiver, barrel, lever, and magazine. There is virtually no high edge wear, the right side of the frams has a light scratch, the left side a slight handfling mark. The hammer and trigger and trigger block retyain all their original color casehardening. the bore and mechanical functioins are excellent. All screw heads are excellent with original finish. The steel buttplate retains oiver 90% original blued finish. The walnut butt stock and forend are excellent retzaining all their original factory finish and original surface with proper patina and a few very light handling marks.
This is an exceptional original first model Winchester 1895 rifle for the collector seeking a best-of-type example of a rare variation. This Model 1895 'flatside' would be very difficult to up-grade. It has been in a private collection for some twenty years.
