Description:
NSN, .54 Caliber, 33 3/4" barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This is a rare and attractive US martial long arm with cadet proportions, and sporting gun lines. The barrel has an overall dull gray patina with areas of pinprick pitting towards the breech. The “US", and “P / (eagle head) / V" markings are still crisp, and some minor vise marks are visible on the left side of the barrel. The 1807 dated lockplate has a mottled gray and blue-black patina with partially obscured “US" in script on the top edge just behind the replaced pan. The cock and frizzen have a much lighter gray patina with only some very minor freckling in spots. The pin-fastened walnut stock has several old chips missing from the edges of the barrel channel, and numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes in the old, added oil finish. The brass wrist escutcheon, trigger guard, 1808 dated buttplate, and ramrod thimbles all have a matching yellow-ochre patina. The action is firm, functions flawlessly, and a trumpet-tipped, metal replacement ramrod is included. These were the very first carbines made at a national armory, and were intended as gifts for friendly Indian chiefs and VIPs. Only about 1,200 were ever made, and this reconverted example rates fine condition overall. Antique
