Description:
The Winchester Model 71 is considered by many lever action fans to be the best lever action rifle ever made. The 71 was introduced in 1935 as an upgraded Model 1886. At the time it was introduced, newer, small bore high velocity cartridges were all the rage. Winchester realized this could not be effectively done with the .45-70 with the then powders available. Winchester decided to create a new cartridge using the 50-110 case because of the greater powder capacity than the 45-70. However, since the .338 caliber and .358 already existed in the form of the 33 and 35 WCF cartridges, Winchester instead chose a unique bullet diameter for the new cartridge. This decision resulted in the .348 Winchester Center Fire. The new round was a magnum in everything but name – a feat made possible by the 71’s strong action. It has been used successfully to take all types of heavy game in North America. However, the .348’s odd bullet diameter has always prevented it from gaining widespread popularity. Fortunately, cases and bullets are still available. In fact, Hornady produces the excellent FTX bullet in .348 diameter just for the .348 WCF. The Model 71 was produced between 1935 and 1957 for a total of 47,254 rifles – the lowest production figures of any Winchester lever rifle. Although it was only produced in .348 WCF caliber by the factory, many Model 71 rifles have been converted to fire either the .45-70 or wildcat cartridges based on the .348 case, most famously the .450 Alaskan and .50 Alaskan, both of which are famous for their takedown power against the heaviest North American game. Most Model 71 rifles found their way to Alaska, so it is unusual to see one down here in the bottom of the lower 48. The 71 shown here has minor wear from use but retains most of its finish. There are some small rust spots present but they are minor. The only one worth mentioning is one the magazine tube cap. The action is tight even today. Given that rifle was produced around 1955 the high quality of manufacture is evident. The bore has some minor powder residue remaining, but the rifling is deep. The 71 would be a good shooter.
