Description:
This is a very nice example of the Springfield Model 1903 Mark I rifle in .30-06 Springfield. Manufactured in 1919, this rifle started life as a full Mark I model designed to readily accept the Pederson self-loading device. Installation of the Pederson device converted the weapon into a semi-automatic rifle that fired the .30 caliber Remington Automatic cartridge. The Mark I 1903's had several distinct features that the normal 1903 Springfield did not have. The Mark I had a milled ejection port in the left side of the receiver for the spent Pederson cartridges, a special 2-piece trigger sear, and a special magazine cut-off switch that included a spring plunger and lug that locked the Pederson into place in the rifle. With WW1 already over the U.S. soon decided to scrap the Pederson device and start looking for a new battle rifle that was designed as a semi-auto from the start rather than a conversion. The existing Mark I's in service were then converted back to standard 1903 specs as they came into the U.S. Arsenal system for rebuilds. These rebuilds consisted of swapping out the special 2-piece sear and cut-off switch for standard 1903 parts and replacing any other parts that needed servicing. It is estimated that more than 95% of the Mark I's in existence were rebuilt in this manner, and this particular rifle is one of the 95%. According to the serial number on the receiver which is 1146525, this rifle was built in 1919 as a full Mark I. It was rebuilt most likely sometime in 1920, as the barrel date suggests. It no longer has the Mark I sear or cut-off switch, but outside of an "R" marked (Remington) bolt shroud it appears to be all original Springfield parts. As you can see in the pictures it is a good looking rifle. The parkerized finish has a nice uniform appearance on the receiver and the stock and handguard are a close match. The rear sight sleeve, barrel, and front sight show a dark mottled appearance from some previous rust but are all consistent with each other. The bore is in great shape in this 1903. It still shows nice strong rifling with well-defined lands and grooves. There is just a little minor frosting in the grooves but the throat gauges a "3" and the muzzle gauges a "1" which shows that this rifle should be an excellent shooter with more than 90% of the barrel life remaining. The rear sight on this Springfield is in perfect working order and the windage knob has not been buggered up like so many we encounter. The sight adjusts easily and smoothly from left to right and the elevation slide locks in position perfectly at any setting. The original stock set on this 1903 is in excellent shape overall. While it has been lightly sanded, the original cartouches are still faintly visible and the wood is free from any cracks, chips, or repairs. It is 100% solid and only shows some minor handling/storage marks and no significant marring. This rifle comes complete with an original U.S. M1907 leather sling in average to good condition. While the sling shows some age it is still solid, strong, and complete. The leather has been conditioned over the years so it is still soft and flexible, and all of the original stitching and brass hardware is intact and tight. This is just a very nice honest example of the Springfield 1903 Mark I. It is 100% functional and the controls are work as they were designed to. The bolt works smoothly by hand and goes into battery nice and tight. The original 2-stage trigger is exceptional on this 1903, breaking at the 2nd stage with a very light pull with no creep or grittiness. Every military weapons collection should have an example of the legendary Springfield 1903 rifle. Serving the U.S. Army and Marines in numerous wars and conflicts from it's inception thru the Korean War, there are very few weapons in the world that have compiled such an excellent reputation and battle record as the 1903 in any of it's numerous configurations. This Mark I should prove to be an excellent investment and a great deal of fun at the range or afield.
