Description:
T-back sword bayonet for use on the 11 mm M1874 Gras rifle. This M1874 bayonet was produced for the government at the French state arms plant at St. Etienne. French Government bayonets are marked on the blade spine with the factory, month, and year of production; this example is marked "Mre d'Armes de St. Etienne Avril 1879". There are small markings and numbers all over this bayonet: on the ricasso right side; in numerous places on the crossguard and quillon; inside the pommel; and on the latch inside the pommel. The crossguard is numbered 20890. There are markings on the ball tip of the blued steel scabbard; the scabbard is marked G 53608(?).
Excellent-plus condition throughout. No dents or dings in scabbard. Blade immaculate, as close to mint as you will ever see. All wood and brass excellent. This comes with the high quality reproduction frog seen in the photos.
