Description:
This is a very early Third Variation of the big Model 3 Sized Frame S&W Russian Revolver.  Caliber .44 S&W Russian.  Barrel 6.5", Lanyard on the Butt, Russian military spur on trigger guard intact.  All the books I own say these Third Model Russians start at serial number 39,000 but this one is 38,847.  153 numbers under that and has a pinned front sight like the Second Model Russian instead of the integral front sight as described on the Third Models. Transition Variation? There is an "SH" in a diamond on the bottom of the gripstrap indicating Schuyler, Hartley and Graham, a large American Distributor for S&W, and is one of 13,500 out of the total 60,638 that stayed in the United States and sold on the Commercial Market.  Most of production were in the form of military contracts that went to Russia, Turkey, and Japan....which at the time were arch-enemies with one another.  There was even a squabble from Turkey about the use of the term "Russian Model" on the barrels which caused the manufacturer to remove it.   Production was from 1874-1878 and a number of famous lawmen like Pat Garrett carried them in the Western Frontier Days. The numbers are all matching with the grips numbered to the frame and then sub-assembly "416" all matching on the inside of the frame, cylinder, barrel, and latch.  If its somewhere else, let me know and I'll look.
Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Fine Plus with 85% of original blue on the frame. Typical of most S&W's, the blue has flaked from the barrel and cylinder...my guess is this was from a combination of heat expansion when firing and holster wear.  The barrel has 20% original blue remaining mostly in the barrel rib, lug, and around the front sight.  The cylinder has 60% original blue, strong in the flutes and 25% thinning blue on the outside of the chambers.  Grips are Fine Overall with excellent wood to metal fit and have never been sanded or refinished.  I want to say they're either walnut or rosewood and being of military origin, they're oil finished instead of varnished.  The case colors on the hammer and trigger guard have faded to a mottled grey with a little bit of blues and greens in the protected areas.  Screws and pins are all very good....with a tiny bit of chafing around some of the holes. English Barrel address is crisp with patent dates up to 1869 and "RUSSIAN MODEL".  Action is in nice working order.  Frame to Barrel latches up tight.  Bore is nearly Mint.  Nice example!
