Description:
Update 10/19/19: The gunsmith cleaned the bore out to remove any lead residue. The pictures have been updated to reflect this. This would defenitely be a shootable gun with porper hardcast bullets. The Winchester Model of 1873 is considered by many to be the rifle that won the west. The rifle became very popular in the old west due to its being chambered for the same cartridges that the Colt Peacemaker was chambered for. Both pistol and rifle came out in 1873, the Peacemaker in .45 Long Colt and the Winchester in 44-40, but it was not long before Colt was chambering its revolvers in the popular 44-40. Later on, the 38-40 was added to the Winchester line and once again, the Peacemaker was chambered for it as well, allowing the owner to carry just one cartridge for both rifle and pistol. Curiously, the 38-40 is actually a 40-caliber cartridge, or around .401 inches in bullet diameter, much like the modern .40 S&W. The rifle shown here is a 3rd Model Rifle, meaning that the singular guide for the dust cover is machined into the receiver rather than being a separate part held down by a screw. The “Rifle” designation means it has the 24” barrel rather than the 20” barrel of the carbine or the 30” barrel of the musket version. The rifle appears to have been re-blued, or at least the receiver appears to have been re-blued. A Lyman Globe peep rear sight has been added. Peep rear sights of various kinds were a popular modification for Winchester lever rifles as they increased the line of sight (distance between front and rear sights), allowing for more accurate fire at long ranges. With a full-length magazine tube, the 1873 has a capacity of 15 rounds plus one in the chamber. The buttstock storage space contains a four-piece cleaning rod and patch holder. The bore exhibits pitting but the rifling is still defined. It would still make a nice shooter. The top of the bolt has minor wear which is shown in the pictures. The action is still excellent and very tight despite its age. The serial number dates this rifle to the year 1890, which makes this rifle 129 years old! The rifle comes with a copy of Homestead Firearms Presents 1873 Winchester Disassembly and Gunsmithing by Charles van Ripper III.
