Description:
General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1921, 12 Gauge, 7lbs, Chokes M/F, LOP 13 7/8", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 3/4"
Serial Number: 353421

The Ithaca Gun Co. sold more double shotguns than any other American maker of its time, and by a very long margin.  The prices, grade for grade, were competitive with the other makers, i.e. Parker, L.C. Smith, Lefever, A.H. Fox, but they sold so many more guns.  It can be said that the buying public found Ithaca a better gun for the money and bought the Ithaca gun.  My own observation is that, grade for grade, Ithaca doubles have better wood, far better checkering, often superior engraving, and equal mechanics and handling characteristics compared to the other makers.  In today’s world of vintage American doubles, Ithaca is an undervalued shotgun.  This gun is no exception.  This is a “Flues” model, Grade 4E, sn353421 made in 1921.  The post-1915 Flues Grade 4 engraving pattern was done in a vine and floral pattern that covered most of the frame, with nicely done game scenes on the right and left side of the action, detailed borders, and a nicely engraved trigger guard.  They made a good number of Grade 4 Ithaca guns in 12ga., but  only about half of them had ejectors.  I can safely say that you will rarely find any that have condition like this fine example.  This 4E retains all factory original finishes, with 99% bold, vivid case color, sharp, clear engraving, 98% barrel blue, and 85% trigger guard blue.  Maybe the most outstanding feature that shows the superior value of the Ithaca Grade 4E is the checkering and wood, with very nice figure, flor-de-lis checkering with multiple ribbons in the wrist and forend, and an ebony forend tip.  It is just better than all other vintage American maker’s Grade 4 guns.  The mechanics are perfect on this gun as well, with the barrels tight on the hinge pin and standing breech, top lever well to the right of center, excellent screws, no cracks in the wood, excellent wood-to-metal fit, triggers are crisp, and the ejectors are well timed.  The 28” M/F barrels have tight ribs, double ivory beads, mirror bores, and still have the factory jeweling on the barrel flats and breech face.  THIS IS A GORGEOUS GUN!  The LOP is just barely 14” and we can add a pad if someone likes the gun but needs more LOP.  We chose to leave it with the buttplate for now.  The high-grade, high condition Ithaca 4E ejector gun in 12ga. is still a superb value (compare this gun to a Grade 4 Parker, or a CHE in this condition and you will see what I mean) and a great investment vehicle for your hard-earned money.  What a gun for your upland pursuits at 7lbs., which is light for a 12ga. double gun, and to shoot at your local vintage clays games.  Great value, great gun.  Thanks for looking!
