1870s Antique J.M. MARLIN Ballard No. 2 Rifle
Attractive Rifle in .38 Long with Octagonal Barrel
Here we present an antique J.M. Marlin Ballard No. 2 Rifle in .38 Long, made circa 1876-1881 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Ballard design was utilized during the Civil War and retained a following after the conflict as it was simple and rugged. Though Winchester Model 1866s and 1873s were the latest and greatest in firepower, the Ballard was the sidearm of many during this period characterized by conflict and westward expansion.
This rifle features a fully octagonal barrel with standard blade front sight and semi-buckhorn rear. This rifle has a unique reversible firing pin. The left side of the receiver is marked “J.M. MARLIN. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A./PATENTED. FEBRUARY 9, 1875/ BALLARD’S PATENT.NOV.5.185”. The top of the barrel is marked “38 LONG”.
The overall condition is good. The bluing has turned gray-brown with time. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape with handling marks throughout and a sliver on the left side as it meets the frame. The bore is in good shape with strong rifling. The action on this rifle is currently nonfunctioning as it is in need of a replacement mainspring. Otherwise, this rifle is a handsome piece of history that would be great for display!
