Description:
FN/Browning A5 16ga 2 3/4, Grade III, Felix Funken signed, 1929 Belgium manf. - 2 barrels and Browning PreWar Case

A complete and thorough description and packing list is shown below.

A rare item indeed, a Great Depression era FN/Browning A5 16ga Grade III Felix Funken signed, 1929 Belgium manf. - 2 barrels and Browning PreWar Case.  This exquisite firearm, in Grade III style, is engraved and signed by the Master Engraver and Head of the FN/Browning Engraving School, Felix Funken.  This is a 2 barrel shotgun, with the first barrel serial numbered to the receiver.  The second barrel, is a two digit serial number, added to the shotgun order.  This 16ga was a 2 9/16 chamber and was rechambered to 2 3/4.  Adding more to this rarity of the Funken signed Grade III 16ga is a Browning PreWar 16ga - 2 barrel 1930 Model B hard case.  This entire package would have sold for $249.15 in 1929.   See below description for more detail.

The Grade III, often referred to as the 'Smiling Dog' shotgun is a prime example of quality.  The engraving detail is stunning and true artisan craftsmanship from a bygone era.  Engraving of this quality, might be found in the market today, but the cost to render this quality is very expensive to have performed.

Shipping and Insurance is included in the price(see details below).  Please email me with any questions or for additional pictures.

Wood - Butt Stock: Semi-Pistol or Rounded Grip -  Nice figuring European/English Walnut with open pore hand-rubbed oil finish - Hand cut checkering and still great definition for being 90 years old - Pistol grip round knob is thin and has non-crossing checkering pattern (characteristic and period correct for the 16ga) - At the end of the round knob there is a small stamping in the wood and it is a small square with the initials "VB" inside the square.  There is no data from FN or Browning to positively determine what the stamping means.  Various examples of these stampings have been noted as numbers and/or letters -  Wood mars and handling marks (see photos) great condition for the age.
Wood - Forearm: Nice figuring European/English Walnut with open pore hand-rubbed oil finish - Finger groove runs the length of the forearm (period correct) - Hand cut checkering and still great definition for being 90 years old - Forearm is serial numbered to the receiver - Wood mars and handling marks (see photos) great condition for the age.

Wood - Magazine Adaptor or "Plug":  Plug is original to this shotgun.  Stamped in the plug wood shaft is "XXXXXXXX  PAT".  I cannot read the alpha characters before the word PAT.  It may be the word BROWNING, but the stamping in the wood is very light.  I sprinkled talcum powder over the characters to expose them, but they are just too faint to read.
Extra - Browning Box: NO, I DO NOT HAVE
Extra - Browning Red Hang Tags with Ogden, UT address:  NO, I DO NOT HAVE (These hang tags would have come with this shotgun when new)
Extra - Browning Owners Manual:  NO (I do not have the original issue manual)  -  Yet, I prefer to have owner manuals for firearms I sell - as close to period correct as possible.  Therefore, included with this shotgun is a factory original manual issued from approximately 1946/47, known as Form A 60.  This type-style of Owners Manual-Form A 60 was introduced in 1938 and used for many years thereafter with a few updates over the years.  The updates were as follows and mainly involved page 2.
* - Before the page 2 printing update, the same 1938 type manual had a red or green ink hand-stamp at the bottom of page 2.  The ink stamp states "Post war 16 gauge Belgian made guns will accomodate 2 3/4" or shorter shells."  The ink hand-stamp was used until the supply of these 1938 type manuals were exhausted.
* - The 1938 type PreWar Owners Manual-Form A 60 version was updated Post War(after WWII).  The difference is, the page 2 has updated printing regarding a 16ga stating the use of 2 9/16 & 2 3/4 shells.   And, the page 2 print update eliminated the use of the ink hand-stamp while the rest of the manual basically stayed the same.
Extra - Browning Brown Hang Tag Envelope: NOT ORIGINAL TO THIS SHOTGUN - This Browning Brown Hang Tag Envelope was first issued in 1935 and used for many years thereafter.  This particular envelope is a factory original item and was issued in 1936/37 as the printing font and the St. Louis address is slightly different on the envelope front side and no printing company noted on the envelope reverse side, as seen on the 1935 envelope.  Since the shotgun was manufactured in 1929 this Hang Tag Envelope would not have come with the shotgun when new; however, this Hang Tag Envelope would have held/contained the Owner's Manual noted above (included with this shotgun).
Extra - Browning Hard Case: This is a 1930 Browning Model B Case for a 16ga (NOTE:  A 12 ga will not fit in this case.  Browning PreWar Cases are gauge specific.).  Because this is a 2 barrel case it would have been special ordered.  Per the description in the sales literature - "The Model B case is of the same general specifications as the Model A.  The Model B, however, covered with black, heavy imitation leather, machine-grained to give unusual wearing qualities.  The inside is lined with dark, heavy fabric.  Frame of Northern basswood, same reinforcements and general appearance of Model A.  Your gun will fit snugly, will be protected against dust and moisture, yet will be accessible.  Comparing the Model "B" with any other case similar in price, you will find it the best value for the money. "   Exterior:  original, some wrinkles in the covering, some frayed edges, and the handle grip needs replacement - it can handle the load of the shotgun in the case but handle would need replacement if the intent is to hand carry for long trips.  One of the leather appointments (left-hand side) covering the handle anchor appears to have been replaced - but a nice very near match (see picture 15).  Interior: original, some stains, a couple of fabric tears from barrel extension rubs, leather receiver strap and buckle and leather barrel straps - all good shape and usable, all the rest is good.  This case is is in great shape for being 89 years old.  I would say wear is less than commensurate with age.
Extra - Browning Hard Case Locks: YES - Both are functional working
Extra - Browning Hard Case Key: YES - One (1) Key and Key Envelope
Extra - Browning Historic Letter: NO
Extra - Browning FNH Custom Shop Engraver Signed: Felix Funken, Master Engraver, Head of the FN Herstal Engraving School for FN-Browning engravers.  Funken achieved "Master Engraver" title before WWI.  While serving in WWI, Funken was severely wounded and had to retrain himself entirely in the art of engraving.   Starting again at the beginning/bottom rank and working his way up for a second time to earn the title "Master Engraver".
Extra - Browning VCI Gun Socks: The receiver and each barrel is wrapped and stored in Browning rust inhibiting socks.
