Description:
DESCRIPTION: Early Production Colt U.S. Army Model 1911 Automatic Pistol Colt M1911 Pistol that was part of a lot of 500 shipped to the Benica Arsenal on January 23, 1913. The pistol has the original Colt polished blue finish and checkered walnut stocks. The pistol features the early pattern, round top, rear sight, short hammer, and Type 3, two-tone, magazine with lanyard loop. The blued barrel has a brush blue finish on the chamber and is marked with a gothic "H" inspection mark stamped vertically on the top of the chamber lip. The pistol frame has the serial number "No 21589" located on the right side behind the slide stop hole. "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" is marked in roman letters (serifs) on the left side of the frame in front of the trigger guard. The "WGP" monogram of Ordnance Inspector MAJ. Walter G. Penfield is stamped just above the magazine release. The right side of the slide is marked: "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY" in gothic letters ahead of the ejection port. The opposite side of the slide has the Colt 1897-1911 patent dates in a two-line block followed by the two-line Hartford address. The Rampant Colt motif is stamped behind the serrations on the left side of the slide. A gothic "H" provisional inspection mark is stamped on the back of the slide above the firing pin stop. A "H" and "6" are stamped on the top of the receiver in front of the disconnector hole.

CONDITION: Excellent. The pistol retains nearly 95% of the original Colt polished blue finish. The finish on the grip strap and main spring housing is thinning slightly.. The finish on the right side of the slide below the ejection port is also somewhat thin. The balance of the frame and slide retain more than 95% of the blue finish. The barrel has more than 98% of the brush blue finish on the chamber. The bore has some dark areas but is generally excellent. All of the markings on the slide and frame are crisp and clear. The walnut grips are in excellent plus condition and exhibit only very minor handling wear. The magazine is in very fine condition and retains approximately 85% of the two-tone blue and case-hardened finish. This is an outstanding example of a hard-to-find early production M1911 pistol in excellent condition.

I purchased this Colt from a known Collector in 2014 for $12,000.
