Antique NEW ENGLAND Rifle c.1840 by LEVI HEMENWAY
Half-Stock Percussion Smoothbore
Here we present an antique Half-Stock New England Buck & Ball Musket by Levi Hemenway, made circa 1840 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. This long gun would have been used for hunting and defense in the mid-1800s. The bore is .51 caliber and would have shot either a single projectile or even the buck & ball loading which featured a large projectile with several smaller ones. The lock is engraved along with the trigger guard. The top barrel flat is marked with two eagles over a “L. HEMENWAY”, just behind the rear sight. The rear sight is a modern Marbles sight, while the front sight is the original blade.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a dark brown patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. The smooth bore is in good condition. The action is strong and crisp.
