Description:
General Specs: Lefever, Year 1899, 12 Gauge, 7lb, Chokes M/F, LOP 14", DAH 2 1/8", DAC 1 5/16"
Serial Number: 30760

The vintage American side x side has not seen such demand since the 1920's.  With coverage in national magazines, active collector’s associations, and a burgeoning vintage sporting clays circuit, gunners now realize that vintage guns were simply better in so many ways.  The shooting characteristics, from handling dynamics to choke boring, outperform today's production guns.  When it comes to fine walnut stocks, hand cut fancy checkering, hand cut engraving with intricate borders, scroll, and game scenes… modern guns under $10K cannot compare to the finest of the old.  With investors seeking tangible assets in which to invest, the best of these fine vintage doubles have disappeared from the radar.  Most sought after are the Parker, A.H. Fox, and the L.C. Smith guns, in that order.  This fine Lefever CE, sn30760 made in 1899, is obscure by comparison.  The first of the "big five" makers to go out of business, Lefever Arms Co. was purchased by Ithaca Gun Co. in 1916.  Few of Dan Lefever's sideplate guns were produced by Ithaca, and by 1919 the "Guns of Lasting Fame" were no more.  I find the Syracuse Lefever guns to be amongst the most beautiful of them all.  With less than 2000 or so 12 ga. C Grades made, it is no wonder most have never seen one.  Finding a fine CE offered for sale is a rare opportunity to own one of the most beautiful and artful shotguns to enjoy your gunning pursuits.  At 7lbs. and balanced just so in hand, this gun is a treasure to be had!  The engraving is simply breath taking, with elaborate borders, fine detailed scroll work, and amazing vignettes showing intricate dogs and game scenes, all done by the master engraver Joseph Loy.  The beautifully figured European walnut is solid with no cracks and has superb checkering and modern shooting dimensions.  The barrels are very safe and sound Damascus barrels with perfect mirror bores, choke M/F, and having a very safe 29 thou minimum wall thickness in the right barrel and 30 thou in the left barrel.  The barrels are tight on the ball hinge and breech face and the ejectors, triggers, safety all work just as they should.  This is an amazing gun at a very affordable price that is not often seen for sale, so don’t miss out on this one.  Thanks for looking!
