This is nice clean 38/55 takedown rifle. Yes it's the right caliber in the highly desirable 38-55 cartridge. Octagon barrel with full mag tube has an excellent bore. Made in 1897 according to letter from Cody Firearms Museum but the other literature andsays 1895. I'll let you be the judge on what to believe. The important thing that is beyond question is that it is antique. And it has great condition for an antique Winchester 1894. An untouched and all original example. Model 1894 rifles of this era were ofetn WELL used and with little finish remaining. The receiver retains the majority of it's bright original bluing with corners losing bluing from handling. The lever and hammer still have approx. 50% original case color intact. Barrel and magazine tube have 90% bright original bluing with finish wear on the sharp edges and some wear spots showing that the takedown feature has been used in the past. Walnut stocks are free from cracks and are in fine condition with strong original finsh and some really nice grain. The action cycles smoothly and locks up tight.
