Description:

Confederate RICHMOND ARMORY “Low Hump” Musket

Original Infantry Weapon for Southern Infantry

Here we present an original antique Confederate Richmond Armory Rifle-Musket, made in 1863 in Richmond, Virginia. The original Virginia Manufactory of Arms was a state-owned manufacturer of firearms and arsenal in what today is Richmond, Virginia. It was established by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1798 to supply the Virginia militia with firearms. The factory operated from around 1802 to 1821. When the American Civil War broke out in 1861, the works were revived as the Richmond Armory, eventually utilizing the machinery captured from Harpers Ferry in April 1861. The Richmond Armory Rifle-Muskets are easily identified by the hump-back lock plate made from forgings and dies for the U.S. Model 1855 Maynard tape primer lock plate that were captured at Harpers Ferry. While the Model 1855 lock was made to be milled out for the use of paper primers, Richmond left the locks intact and simply used the standard percussion caps directly on the nipple. This musket represents the most numerous domestically produced longarm of the Confederacy and one that would have been found in the infantry’s hands most often.

This rifled musket features the “low hump” Richmond lock marked “C.S./RICHMOND,VA.” and dated “1863”. The butt plate and fore end cap are made of brass. The fore end cap is correctly fastened by a screw. The lock inletting is correct and there is no provision for the Maynard system to be used. The stock is as it should be and not inspector marked. The leather sling is in good condition with an oval mark inside which “MONTGOMERY” is discernible. End of the tulip head ramrod is solid.

The overall condition is very good. The iron has an even gray-brown patina with a bit of pitting around the nipple. The brass hardware is dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock shows use and remains smooth, solid, and whole. The bore is dark with good rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is an exceedingly rare, highly sought-after Confederate made rifle-musket!
