Description:
This Sharps carbine has obviously witnessed a ton of American military history.  First manufactured during the U.S. Civil War as a Model 1863 Carbine that used paper cartridges and a tape primer, it served during the Civil War.  The Sharps was a favorite of the soldiers on both sides of the war.  The breech loading action, small overall size, and excellent accuracy made it a very deadly weapon in the hands of a trained soldier.  The man carrying this carbine could keep up a high rate of accurate fire much greater than those armed with muzzle-loading muskets.  The mounted cavalry used the Sharps to great affect as well on both sides.  In fact, the Sharps was designed with a saddle ring on the left side for mounting the rifle to a shoulder strap, which kept the carbine out of the way and slung under the soldiers arm while on horseback.  At the end of the Civil War the Sharps Carbines were kept in U.S. inventory, and most were converted to the Sharps Model 1865 configuration which fired the .50/70 Government metallic cartridge.  This modernized the carbine to the current standards for continued service with the U.S. Military.  The Sharps carbine continued to serve with distinction in the American Indian Wars.  Most of the action in these battles was from horseback or dismounted after riding into position to fight, so the Sharps again was the favored weapon of the soldiers.  The Sharps contuned to serve the U.S. Military thru the Indian Wars until finally being replaced entirely by the 1873 Trapdoor Rifle and Carbine in .45-70 Government caliber.  This particular example of a converted Sharps to the 1865 Model appears to be all original and in perfect working order.  The metal parts show little to no original finish remaining, but what does remain has turned a brown/blue color.  The patina looks very nice overall, and exactly what you would expect from a weapon that was used thru two wars over many years that is +/-150 years old.  All of the original factory stamps are still nice and legible which are located on the top of the barrel ahead of the receiver, and on the right side plate of the receiver.  The bore in this Sharps is exceptional.  The bore is bright and clean with nice strong rifling.  It has obviously been very well cared for while it was in service and over the years since.  While both the front and rear sights are still intact on this Sharps, the rear sight slide has been lost at some point.  The original stock set is nice and solid, but certainly shows some wear and tear from it's service.  Of particular note is the wear on the left side of the buttstock.  There is a wide band of wear perpindicular to the stock that is 1.25" inches wide.  This is certainly where the butt rubbed up against a harness or some other type of field gear while in a saddle scabbard, likely during the American Indian Wars where U.S. troopers had to ride horseback far and wide to patrol and fight.  Despite the wear on the stock set there is a protected area under the sling bar where the original Civil War era cartouche is still visible (there is a picture provided in the listing of this).  All of the controls on this carbine are in perfect working order.  The action is still nice and tight and locks inbto battery perfectly.  The trigger still has functioning safe and full cock positions, and the trigger works perfectly, breaking with a light pull.  If you have been looking for a new addition for your antique military weapons collection that has witnessed a ton of U.S. Military history, it this Sharps would be a hard gun to top.  The Sharps is one of the most recognizable carbines used in the Civil War and Indian Wars, and it's unique shape and design make it an excellent decorator piece as well.  As an antique, this carbine can be shipped to your door.
