FASCINATING Japanese Murata Type 13 “TANEGASHIMA”

Traditional Matchlock Converted to Shotgun

Here we present an antique Tanegashima Converted to a Shotgun via a Murata Type 13 action. The Tanegashima in Japan dates to the mid-16th Century, when the Portuguese brought this 15th Century European concept to the shores of the Japanese Island of Tanegashima, for which the musket is named. With just a few examples Japanese swordsmiths were able to duplicate and produce their own on a large scale, forever changing how wars would be fought in Japan by the end of the 16th Century. Fast forward to the late-19th Century and Japan adopted their first indigenously designed and manufactured rifle, the bolt action Murata Type 13.

This piece is an interesting combination of these two technologies, with Japan’s first matchlock musket’s styling and the first modern bolt action made in Japan. This was made with a smooth bore for use with shot instead of a single projectile. The front sight is a brass bead. This breech-loader bears brass décor with hammered designs like flowers and a fantastical beast on the rear of the stock.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The stock is in good shape. The bore is smooth and dusty with age. The action on this musket is strong. Here is a fascinating example of a late-19th Century Shotgun Conversion of a Tanegashima using a Murata!
