Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK Pocket Sized PEPPERBOX
Made Circa 1856 in Worcester, Massachusetts
Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Pocket-Sized Pepperbox, manufactured circa 1856 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Ethan Allen was already a prolific inventor in the 1830s when he came up with this design. His business was very successful. These revolvers enjoyed even greater popularity than Sam Colt’s first designs. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history.
This pepperbox is capable of firing 5 shots of .31 caliber ball. The barrel is marked “ALLEN & WHEELOCK”. The hammer is marked “PATENTED/APRIL 16, 1845”.
The overall condition is near fine. The original blue finish on the barrel is about 75%. The markings are clear and legible. The assembly number is “11” and all parts match. The walnut grips are in very good condition and are also numbered to match. The bores are smooth and in good condition. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a very nice example of a unique American design!
