Description:
SOLD / original WWII Japanese Samurai Sword with Battle Damage, This Japanese Sword has an overall blade length of 34 1/2" and like most was captured during WWII but this sword did not escape the battlefield unscathed. The (tsuba) shows damage that I believe was caused by shrapnel along with the rear portion of the handle (tsuka) which was completely blown off about 1 inch before the pommel that also damaged the binding, I can only imaging what this soldiers hand looked like. This sword was purchased directly from the son of a Navy veteran who probably bought it from a Marine.  I believe this is what is referred to as a late war mid grade Japanese officer sword with an arsenal-made blade. The blade tang bears Japanese characters on both sides of the tang along with four characters painted on the blade (see Photo's). This sword has definitely seen use as indicated by the blade and handle condition. The 26 3/4 inch long blade appears to have had a sharpening stone run along its edge, there are stains and rub marks throughout, it definitely wasn’t properly taken care of and I believe it could be re-polished and restored if desired. The fittings on the sword are of iron in the typical late war pattern. The two hole tang is also typical of this period's arsenal forged blades. The setting has a lock that locked it to the scabbard, but that mechanism was damaged when the handle was damaged. The scabbard itself is good, showing areas of light surface rust, with a good amount of the original paint intact, and nice patina. Here's your chance to buy a nice Japanese relic that shows battle damaged from the War in the South Pacific, will make a great display piece, just wish it could talk.  Inv.: # J 4229
