March 1860” “DAP” Inspection marks on left side of stock wrist and “H” inspection mark on left side of barrel just ahead of receiver 30” Barrel, 3-band, two sling swivels mounted on stock and mid barrel band. Butt stock magazine tube holds 7 rounds Folding leaf rear sight and block mounted blade front sight, front sight doubles as bayonet lug Weight – 10#’s Original antique condition with saddle wear on right forearm, all there and in working condition Spencer’s factory records in Boston, MA and army records at Carlisle Barracks, PA document the army ordinance with the department orders, payment dates and deliver dates in sequential blocks of serial numbers. Identified as being delivered on 4-22-1863 to 4-29-1863 were five hundred Spencer rifles, serial numbered 4700 - 5199 to Colonel John Wilder’s brigade, the 17th Indiana Infantry Regiment, the 72nd Indiana Mounted Infantry, the 98th Illinois Mounted Infantry and the 123rd Illinois Mounted Infantry at Murfreesboro, Tenn. There are several positively identified serial numbers in this block belonging to Wilder’s brigade. These rifles were used by Wilder and his cavalry brigade in their significant victory on 6-28-1863 at the battle of Hoover’s Gap, Tenn., in the Tullahoma campaign and also was successful at the battle of Chickamauga, GA in September 1863. They became known as the Lightning Brigade and were instrumental in helping to turn the tide in the union’s favor. Their Spencer rifles gave them an immense fire power advantage.
