Description:
MODEL 1909 U.S. ARMY .45 COLT CALIBER NEW SERVICE REVOLVER, #34XXX. This is an interesting Colt and no doubt has some history to it. After being issued to the U.S. Army, it was probably sold as surplus. According to the excellent and detailed book COLT’S NEW SERVICE REVOLVER  by Timothy J. Mullen: “After WWI a number of Army Model 1909 revolvers were sold as surplus. Some of these were acquired by the Cleveland Trust Co., where they were used to arm the guards who transferred money between their various bank branches, which numbered 42 by 1920. The company owned 500 various revolvers, Remington M10 shotguns…etc.” This may or may not be one or their guns, but certainly it was not uncommon for many of these M-1909s to be sold as surplus. This example shows fine blue overall that is bright in the protected areas and mixing dull/brown/gray on the higher areas and edges. The U.S. PROPERTY marking on the bottom of the barrel and butt markings have been very neatly removed, yet there is a partial “RAC” inspector stamping visible under the barrel and an excellent "RAC" on the back of the cylinder face. The lanyard swivel has been removed and filled so expertly, that unless you use a magnifier under the right light you simply can’t see where it was filled! The early correct stylized C with rampant colt stamping on the frame is distinct and the colt markings on the barrel are excellent, correct smooth walnut grips show wear but are solid, very tight action and lock-up with exc. bright bore. Lots of life still left in this old Colt war horse!
