Description:
General Specs: Marlin, Year 1893 , .38-55 Win, 8lbs, LOP 13 1/8"
Serial Number: 101322

What an incredible piece of history we have before us in this antique Marlin Deluxe special-order rifle.  Can you imagine ordering a gun like this Model 1893 and taking delivery at the local general store in time for Christmas of 1893?  What the town's people must have thought, and what pride of ownership the gent must have had.  Imagination can only surmise that this was a Christmas gift to Walter A. Lewis, as his name is factory engraved on the left side of the receiver.  I especially like the less common lever guns from the days of the Old West…you know, the ones we saw in the cowboy movies.  To find a “DELUXE”, factory engraved rifle documented by Cody Firearms Museum in factory original condition with several special-order features is always exciting.  This rifle, sn101322 shipped in December of 1893 is one of those rifles.  As noted in Colonel Brophy's seminal book on Marlin guns entitled "MARLIN FIREARMS --- A History of the Guns and the Company That Made Them", the early records did not record whether the guns were ordered with engraving, or other special-order features.  However, the gun does speak for itself.  They do tell us that the rifle was shipped with the 26” octagon barrel, .38-55 caliber, and pistol grip stock.  The pistol grip is what makes this a “deluxe” rifle.  This gun was shipped with figured English walnut pistol grip stocks, B style checkering, and No. 1 style engraving with a custom ordered presentation vignette on the left-hand side, almost certainly engraved by Conrad Ulrich.  The condition of this gun factory original.  The 26” barrel retains 30% factory blue, bore is lightly frosted with strong rifling.  The factory case colors on the receiver are 55% coverage and faded with age, case colors on lever about 40%, on the hammer 75%.  The screws are excellent, and all correct.  The wood has no cracks or repairs, the factory checkering is original and sharp, with minor handling marks.  All the lettering and markings on the gun are crisp, clear, and untouched.  This is a rare find; a special-order rifle with a popular .38-55 cartridge still readily available and viable for the deer woods.  This is a gun that is investment quality but still can be enjoyed in the field.  Don’t let this one get away.  Thanks for looking!
