Description:

Antique OHIO “S.L. WALKER” Half-Stock Long Rifle

Made in CEDARVILLE w XENIA Lock!

Here we present an antique Half-Stock Percussion Long Rifle by S. L. Walker, made in Cedarville, Ohio circa the 1850s. Walker was recorded to have worked in the firearms trade from about 1854-89. The top of the barrel is marked “S.L. WALKER”. The lock is marked “P.S. LAUMAN/XENIA O”. Xenia lies just about 8 miles down the road from Cedarville to the south-west. Incidentally, Xenia, Ohio is where Samuel Hawken (the maker of the Hawken plains rifle) first launched his gun-making business before moving to St. Louis, Missouri.

This rifle features a long 38-inch octagonal barrel with a .30 caliber bore. It is equipped with double set triggers, an aid in precision as well as safety. This would have made an ideal rifle for hunting small game. Butt plate and trigger guard are of brass. Pewter fore end cap.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

The top of the barrel is marked “S.L. WALKER”. The lock is marked “P.S. LAUMAN/XENIA O”.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is dark. The stocks are in god shape. The action on this rifle is nonfunctioning.
