Francotte, Liege: A 20 Bore Sidelock Engraved by Grand Master Engraver Mr. Philippe Grifnee, A Francotte Best Model De Luxe 20 Bore Bar Action Sidelock Ejector 2 Barrel Set Made in 1985, Both barrels are 27" Chopper Lump with a hidden third bite; The #1 barrel at .629 .004 & .011" (Skt.I & Skt.II), 2 3/4" chambers; The #2 barrel at .626 .013 & .027" (Mod. & Full), Original 3" chambers, Double triggers with the front articulated, Bushed strikers, Side clip action body, All internal parts are Gold plated including the forend mechanics, Both barrels have their own forend that is a very very slight beavertail and for all intents like a Splinter forend with a frontal Anson release, Open pistol grip at 14 11/16 x 1 1/2 x 2 3/8" over a superb engraved case color hardened skeleton buttplate (One of the best I have seen), Neutral stock, True 20 frame weight of only 5 lbs. 12 oz. with either barrel, 100% coverage of very nice floral engraving that is well cut and styled by the Grand Master Engraver Mr. Philippe Grifnee, He engraved for both H&H and Purdey, Extensive Gold borders, Excellent wood with excellent color & contrast, Fleur-De-Lis checkering; This piece is 1985 original, It retains 96% vivid original case colors, The original barrel blue is 98%, The stock remains at 97%, The checkering remains at 99%, The barrels inside & out are excellent plus and look like new, It is cased in the makers brass cornered oak & leather trunk with nice accessories and a trade label, The barrels ring with a very nice chime, It is tight on the face and remains as a really solid gun that was very well kept. One of the best out of Belgium with very nice engraving by a renowned engraver. It comes to hand with ease with what I think is great stock dimensions. This is top drawer stuff from a company and an engraver that unfortunately are not with us anymore.
Philippe Grifnée graduated from the school of engraving in Liège, Belgium in 1970 after studying under renowned engraver René Delcour. From 1970 to 1988, he worked for Auguste Francotte refining his skills in the art of fine gun engraving. Besides working to perfect his skills he began sharing his knowledge by teaching at the school of engraving in Liège. In 1988, Philippe’s exquisite work caught the eye of gun makers Holland & Holland of London, England and he began engraving fine firearms for them, with an exclusivity contract between 1992 and 1997. Then, in 1997 another reputable company in London, James Purdey & Sons, Ltd. contracted Philippe. He began engraving for both Holland and Purdey. Philippe has also been formally recognized for his exquisite work by the Belgian government twice. In 1992, they awarded him a silver medal and in 1999 a gold medal. We received word on May 10, 2012 that Mr. Grifnee had passed away.
