CIVIL WAR Antique COLT 1849 Pocket Revolver mfg 60

Fantastic Cylinder Scene w Bullet Mold & Flask

Here we present an antique Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver, made in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut. Over 280,000 of these were produced by Colt’s factory at Hartford by the end of the American Civil War in 1865. These were very popular and saw a lot of use on the battlefield, on the home front and in the West. These were some of the smallest, handiest pocket revolvers of the time. They embody the “small enough to carry, big enough to fight with” sidearm.

One of the most aesthetically pleasing aspects of this pistol is its cylinder scene. Cylinder scenes during this period were common, especially for Colt, not only for their visual appeal, but because it made a revolver more difficult to forge. The scene on the 1849 Pocket is that of a stagecoach robbery. The focal point is the stagecoach drawn by four horses. A woman in a dress is seen framed in the doorway of the side of the coach. The driver is standing alongside wielding his pistol against multiple assailants as the horses rear and struggle against their harnesses. Several of the bandits lay dying on the ground, one tries to control the horses, two are running away and one is in the process of falling dead after being shot. Not a bad way to show interested buyers what a pistol like this would be good for.

This specimen is in near fine condition. It features the longest standard barrel length of 6 inches. The barrel address is the two-line Hartford. Strong traces of the original blue remain. Case colors are still visible and even vibrant on the frame and loading lever. Original silver plate is about 10%. A nice soft patina makes up the rest. The markings are clear. The metal surfaces have a pleasing dark gray patina. The cylinder scene is excellent. The original walnut grips are in very good condition with most of the original varnish, and a little wear on the flared edges. The action is excellent. The bore is in fine condition, well-rifled and shiny. All serial numbers match with the exception that the cylinder is a digit off. There is a possibility that this was a mistake at the factory, though it would be very difficult to say definitively. This revolver comes with an original Colt’s Patent bullet mold and brass federal eagle powder flask. Here is a fantastic set from 1860!
