Description:
General Specs: William Evans, Year 1889, 12 Gauge, 6lbs 7oz, IC/M, LOP 14 3/8", DAH 2 1/4", DAC 1 3/8"
Serial Number: 1903

William Evans was a prestigious London gunmaker beginning in 1883 when he opened his own shop.  He began his career in firearms working for Purdey’s and Holland & Holland prior to going out on his own.  He made it his trademark to only produce the FINEST QUALITY GUNS, whether boxlock or sidelock, rifle or shotgun.  William Evans Ltd. Is still carrying on the tradition of building BEST LONDON GUNS today in its shop on James St. in London’s gunmakers district.  This fine example of his work is a fine bar-action hammer gun built in the early 1890’s, sn 1903.  There are LOTS OF ENGLISH HAMMER 12 BORE GUNS ON THE MARKET, but this gun does stand out.  William Evans has always been known for producing some of London’s finest shotguns.  The engraving is superbly executed fine English scroll still sharp and clear covering about 60% of the frame and trigger guard.  The English style stock and splinter forend are nicely shaped with great shooting dimensions, drop points, and expertly recut checkering with a mullered border.  The 28” barrels were sleeved by Westley Richards in modern times and have excellent bores choked IC/LM.  They retain 99% of a London quality blue and the lettering on the smooth game rib is clean and sharp.  This gun weighs a svelte 6 ½lbs. and balances perfectly 3/16” ahead of the hinge pin for that dynamic handling we have all come to love in a fine English double gun.  Evidence of the old-world craftsmanship stand out in the nicely filed bolsters, rounded action, gracefully sculpted hammers and fences, and the doll’s head rib extension.  The gun is cased in a vintage oak and leather case that remains in very nice condition complete with the vintage William Evans trade label.  The handle and straps have recently been replaced and the back hinge is solid, as is the balance of the case.  The case brings you back to the time of fine guns, privileged gentry, and completes the package of your vintage gunner’s set.  This gun is tight as new on the hinge pin and breech face and the mechanics are excellent throughout.  She is ready to shoot for fowl and clay targets.  What a fun gun to own as a functioning work of art.  Thanks for looking!
