HANDSOME Mid-19th Century HIDEOUT Carry Gun in .54
Here we present a small antique Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1840s in Europe. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. They could be easily stowed in a pocket or in the case of a woman, a fur muff or purse. They were of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
This specimen features a folding trigger and turn off barrel for loading. This was advantageous to the user as shoving a ball with a ramrod via the muzzle was quite difficult. Loading from the breech allowed a larger ball to be used, improving the gas seal and making this diminutive pistol more efficient. The grain of the grip is higher end and beautiful. The frame is nicely engraved. The barrel and frame are numbered “6”. A very nice and quality concealed carry pistol from 19th Century France.
The overall condition is very good. The iron surfaces have a gray patina. The markings are clear. The wooden grip is smooth and solid. The smooth bore is dark with oxidation. The action is excellent.
