Antique TURN BARREL “SOUTHERNER” Deringer Pistol
Desirable .41 Caliber RIMFIRE Deringer
Here we present an antique Southerner Deringer Pistol, made circa 1870 either by Merrimack Arms & Manufacturing Co. in 1866-1869 or Brown Manufacturing Co. in 1869-1873. These two manufacturing companies made identical looking pistols, making it virtually impossible to tell them apart.
The "Southerner" Derringer was a neat little turn-barrel pistol. Its name, emblazoned on the top of the barrel, was obviously intended to appeal to buyers south of the Mason-Dixon Line, though incongruously it was manufactured in Newburyport, Mass., by Merrimack Arms and Brown Mfg. Co. Perhaps it was the makers' attempt at letting bygones be bygones-though probably it was just a very clever marketing ploy. The top of the barrel is marked “SOUTHERNER”. 1440 is marked on the bottom of the butt and the bottom of the barrel.
The overall condition is fair. Metal surfaces are weathered. Markings are clear. The rosewood grips are smooth and a little shy on the right. Bore is dark and a little rough. Action is functional aside from the trigger return.
