Description:
SOLD...Antique Smith & Wesson ” transition “ American. Here is a nice and honest Smith & Wesson American transition. These were one of the first large bore revolvers on the frontier and seen very wide use from lawmen and outlaws alike. This model is know as the transition because of the” flat frame” at bottom of the frame and has the interlocking notch on the hammer that fits the tab barrel latch. The first models are flat frame with no provision on the hammer or latch tab. The second models have a hump on the bottom of the frame to add support for of the trigger pin and also the latch tab and hammer notch. This model is somewhat rare and only found in two S/N ranges of 3200 to 3700 and from 6800 to 8000. This does not mean this many was made, but only found in these ranges. This one S/N 7130 and falls in the last S/N range. This gun is all matching on barrel, frame, barrel latch, cylinder and grips... This is a very tight and solid gun. Has the standard 8” barrel. It is still chambered for the S&W American cartridge and has NOT had the cylinder chambers bored out to the .44 Russian cartridge as many of these have been. The finish is a medium brown to gray patina. Just traces of original blue on the left side of the frame and a little on the bottom of the barrel by the hinge. Quit a bit of blue in the top of the barrel rib where protected also.. Some blue on the barrel latch also.. No pitting on the gun. A very pleasing looking gun. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun. No front to rear or side to side cylinder movement. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the latch. Both hammer notches are positive and correct. Ejector works perfectly and still retains the original extractor trip on the bottom as many of these have been broken off and replaced with homemade trips. There are no mechanical issues with this gun unlike many you will find with excessive cylinder movement and loose barrel to frame fit. The bore is very good with very strong rifling and just the normal roughness from black powder. Still very shootable. The cylinder chambers are very good and clean as well. The screw heads are clean and sharp and not all burred up from being monkeyed with. The grips are very nice and a perfect factory fit with no cracks or chips and are original to the gun with the right grip have matching S/N.. This is a rather rare gun to find in this condition at this price. $35 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any question or more photos. Don't miss this one !!! Not liable for miss use or improper loading and firing of any antique firearm.
