Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique UNION Gallager CAVALRY Carbine

Widely Used by Many Cavalry Units During the War

Here we present an antique Gallager Carbine, made by the company Richardson & Overman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1860 through May of 1865. Ironically, the designer of this Union carbine, Mahlon J. Gallager, was a native South Carolinian, living in Savannah, Georgia, when he invented and received a patent for this carbine. About 18,000 guns produced during the years of the war were made at the factory as percussion guns, with another 5,000 made for the .56-50 Spencer cartridge. Per Flayderman, “The Gallager saw extensive service during the Civil War. Among the many cavalry regiments armed with it were the 2nd, 3rd and 6th Ohio, the 13th Tennessee and the 3rd West Virginia.” The Springfield Armory Museum expands that list to include the 9th Pennsylvania, 10th Ohio, and the 4th Kentucky.

After the Civil War, many were sold as surplus by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, in 1860 the largest firearms dealer in the United States. Some 2,500 of the Spencer cartridge versions went to France during the Franco-Prussian War from 1870-1871. Others went to various other places, such as Havana, Cuba. Another large arms dealer, Bannermans, also converted many of these to shotguns in the 1880s.

This original percussion specimen is in very good overall condition. Traces of blue remain with a brown patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth and solid with some light sanding. The bore is excellent, shiny and clean. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22-1/4 inches in length.

Caliber: .50 percussion

Bore is in excellent condition. The firing mechanism is fine.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is another scarce example of an American Civil War Cavalry Carbine!
