The rifles are in near new condition with the outstanding wood and finish associated with Biesen’s superior craftsmanship. Google Grey’s Sporting Journal - Al Biesen, The Genius of Spokane, for a review of his famed workmanship. The rifles were commissioned in 1976 with stocks made with double left and right cheek pieces and tang safety to enable comfortable firing from either shoulder. The owner had incurred a pinch nerve in the right side of his neck and it was sometimes necessary to shoot from his left side. These are the only double cheek piece rifles Biesen ever made. This 7x57 is fully described in Ron Toews’s 1979 book, “Contemporary American Stockmakers", wherein the owner is identified as a prominent journalist and author who wished to remain anonymous. Subsequently, the owner was reported as Neil Sheehan, Pulitzer Prize winner for his book on the Vietnam War, “A Bright Shinning Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam”, and as the reporter who broke the story on the Pentagon Papers, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Time series on the secret history of America in Vietnam. The copy of the Toews book autographed to Neil Sheehan is included with sale of the guns. Both rifles are fitted with classic Zeiss 6x42 Diatal-Z T* scopes and custom Brady of England soft sheepskin leather cases along with the Kalispel hard aluminum shipping cases recommended by Mr. Beisen when the rifles were delivered in 1979/80. Extremely accurate, the 7x 57 Mauser, for example, will group 3 shots under 1/2 inch at 100 yards with Federal Premium ammunition. Also Included are 10 boxes of Federal Premium ammunition and 8 boxes of Remington 6mm ammunition. The LOP is 13 1/2 inches on both rifles.
