Description:
SOLD...Antique and very early Colt 1851 Navy. Here is a very early 3rd model Colt 1851 Navy. S/N 12724 and made in very early 1852.... I collect these early “small guard” Colt Navies as they have seen the Gold Rush era all the way through the Civil War and then the frontier era so most all of these early Navies have seen a ton of history. My personal favorite Colt Percussion revolver by far.... This one is actually the earliest one I have as the others I have are all in the 20,000 to 24,000 S/N range. This is a basic 51 Navy with the standard 7 1/2” barrel. ALL matching numbers throughout including the wedge and arbor pin... The bore is actually very good with very strong and deep rifling with some normal roughness from many years of black powder... No big craters or pits. I have seen much worse bores even on the later percussion Colt's. The markings are still excellent including the very small COLT'S PATENT on the left side of the frame. Amazingly it still shows good traces of the cylinder scene. Maybe 20%. Most of these early Navies have very little to no cylinder scene because of the many years of hard use.. This is why I am selling this one as the others I have retain quite a bit of scene and some finish.. This gun has no finish remaining. It is a medium gray patina with some brown staining throughout with very minor pin prick roughness is a couple areas on the barrel next to the front of the cylinder from black powder flash. NO deep or bad pitting at all. Never ground or filed on as many have been. Excellent brass pin front sight still standing tall and not worn off from holster wear as most of these will show even in the later 3rd and 4th models.. The mechanics are very good. A very crisp and fairly tight gun. It indexes completely on all 6 chambers and locks up with just a little bit of side to side play but still very good for these early Navies... The barrel to frame fit is excellent and tight as new. The barrel just does not fall off when you remove the wedge. You still have to use the rammer to push off of the face of the cylinder to remove the barrel it is still that tight. Most of these are so loose they rattle even with the wedge in place !!!! The bolt and trigger screw heads on the frame show some turning as can be expected but all the others are very clean and not burred up. The brass trigger guard just has traces of silver finish in the bow area. No silver on the back strap. The original slim Jim style grips with the sharp flare on the bottom are very nice and fit perfect but have some oil soaking up next to the frame with a small chip out of both sides at the top were they meet the frame as you can see in the photos. Some varnish has been added also sometime in the past. Still very nice looking and solid grips. A few scratches and dings but nothing major as far as cracks or splits. The butt of the gun and grips have never been used as a hammer as a lot of these old revolvers have been... All in all, not a bad early Navy at all for the money. Shows some honest hard use but never abused over all these years. All completely matching gun here and much better than the loose, rattly and pitted up ones you see for sale in this price range. A good gun that would fit in a collection of these very early and historic Colt Navies. Would display very nicely with an early slim Jim holster and belt rig. $30 insured shipping in the USA.
