Description:
SOLD...   Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 caliber. This is probably the cheapest 1873 44-40 I have ever offered for sale. Here is an original 1873 Winchester in the very sought after 44-40 caliber. Has the standard 24” octagon barrel. S/N 225019 and made in 1887. The bore is good with strong rifling and the minor black powder roughness you will find in these. NO rings, bulges or big pits or craters. No breaks in the rifling. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly with no bulges cases or backed out primers. This gun as all of these 44's will chamber .430 sized cast lead bullets and it shoots very well with these and also would shoot a jacketed bullet as well. The metal has been cleaned to gray with some light cleaning marks but never filed on or anything bad. It has no finish. The corners are all still sharp and the markings are all very good. Never buffed on and no dished out screw holes or washed out markings as you can see. The metal is smooth and not pitted up but a few very small specks at the caliber marking on the barrel and that is it. There are some initials on the left side plate as you can see. I have another set of side plates that I can put on this gun and will included the ones that are on it in the sale. I will clean them to match the rest of the gun or what ever you want me to do. Makes no difference to me. Has the original rear sight with an elevator that looks like it is off of a Marlin as it has the “fish hook” style on the end. The front sight is a later replacement and is marked Marble on one side and Sheard on the other. Has the brass bead. Has an excellent sight picture when sighting down the barrel for shooting. Still has the original dust cover that is loose as most are in this condition. It should be retracted by hand so the bolt will not slide under it and bind the action. This is exactly why most of these were simply removed and thrown away by the early owners. As I mentioned, the action works perfectly on this gun. The wood is not bad.. The forearm is very good and fits tight with no splits or cracks. One small dent on the upper left side by the end cap with no issues. The butt stock is very nice looking with somewhat extra fancy grain but has been cleaned on. It fits perfect and full to the lower tang but just a hair below the upper tang. Fits good to the receiver on both sides with a very small gap between the wood and receiver but not bad heigth wise to the receiver.. Fits tight and full to the butt plate on the right side but a little shy on the left. One very small and tight grain split off the end of the upper tang as you can see. It is not detracting and it is only about an inch long but it is still tight and very solid. Nothing bad or detracting at all and still nice looking. It is what it is ... All the screw heads are excellent and not showing any turning but the side plate screw only shows some turning. If you are looking for a good shooter in 44-40 and do not want to spend $2200 and up for one of these, here it is.. Can't find'em any cheaper with good bores and still very shootable. Priced not much more than reproductions out there !!!!$50 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. I want happy customers. NOT liable for anyone having no knowledge of loading and firing antique firearms.
