Description:
SOLD...  Price reduced!!!   Antique 1873 Winchester 2nd model 44-40 octagon barrel. A good ole 1873 Winchester 2nd model. Caliber is 44-40 of course as most all of these 2nd models are. This rifle was made on a saddle ring carbine receiver which is a pretty rare feature. Madis book says most of these with this feature are found in the 70,000 to 80,000 S/N range. This one is S/N 81117 and made in 1881. I ran the Cody work sheet on this gun and it came back all correct BUT it was shipped with a round barrel... The octagon barrel that is on it a very early 3rd model barrel with the script type caliber markings. So it could be a factory mistake and the gun was shipped with this barrel on it and being it is made on a SRC receiver, it was indeed a gun that was put together with parts on hand which Winchester did do, or someone has changed the barrel years ago which is what I honestly believe happened. This barrel has been on this gun for a LONG, LONG time and if it was changed, it was done very early in life and was done perfectly.. It could go either way so you make up what ever story you believe happened to make your self happy ….. Now that is out of the way, on with my description. Has the standard 24” octagon barrel. The bore is very good with strong rifling all the way through and shows some minor roughness from black powder. NO rings, bulges or deep craters. Still shoots as good as any of them will. As you all know I am not a big fan of the 44-40 caliber for shooting. The 38-40 is the best with less than perfect bright bores. !!! The mechanics are excellent and it feeds, fires and ejects just like it is suppose to. No bulged cases and no backed out primers. Head space is perfect. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive. The metal is a medium to dark brown patina with the barrel having some surface crud but no attempt to clean it. The photos of the barrel address gives you a good idea of the surface crud. It could be cleaned but I am not touching it. No pitting on the gun to mention. Markings are all excellent. No caliber markings on the brass carrier which is correct for these 2nd models. Still has the original dust cover that is very tight like new. It retracts with the lever throw and closes with with that magnetic feel that also most sucks it from your finger and thumb. The screw heads are all good and not burred up. Most of them still have dried up grease and gunk in them and have not been turned in who knows how long !!! Original rear sight being the later flat top design and a later elevator. The front sight being probably original to the gun rocky mountain blade type that was used on these early 1st and 2nd models. The wood is good to very good. The forearm fits very good and has no cracks or splits. There is a very small gap on the rear left side where it meets up with the receiver but it fits perfectly on the right side ??? The butt stock is real nice and fits very tight and even to the metal all around even at the butt plate. Shows the normal wear at the toe of the butt plate. No splits or cracks and still has a great look and color to it. A little common oil soaking next to the receiver and looks like some white paint splatter easily removed. This is not a bad looking ole 73 2nd model for the money. I am pricing it keeping in mind with the possible barrel replacement as I mentioned. If it is the original barrel, then you are getting a great deal !!! If the barrel is not original, then you are still getting a good deal... Would make a dandy 2nd model shooter built on a correct SRC receiver so it does have some rarity. 2nd models are getting hard to find and still in good shape. $50 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. I will not be liable for the lack of knowledge of loading and firing any antique firearm. Shoot at your own risk.
