Description:
This is a very nice example of the sought-after and scarce WW2 Japanese Arisaka Type 99 Sniper model rifle made by Nagoya Arsenal in the later part of production.  The Type 99 "Sniper" was never formally adopted and production was very limited at both Kokura Arsenal and later at the Toriimatsu factory of Nagoya Arsenal.  These limited production sniper rifles were fabricated using Type 99 Short hardware with no special effort taken to hand select the best barrels or actions, etc.  The telescopic sights on Type 99 Sniper's were factory fitted to the rifle and stamped with the rifle's serial number; they were not intended to be swapped from rifle to rifle.  This was due to the fact that the majority of scopes used did not have external adjustments for windage and elevation, rather, the sighting reticle in the scope has a grid for ranging and hold-overs for corrections.  While Kokura Arsenal only manufactured the 2.5X scoped examples, Nagoya Arsenal made both the 2.5X and 4X scoped models.  The "early" production 4-power scoped model appear in the 1 to 5000 serial range, and the "late" production 4-power models are in the 7000 to 10000 serial range.  This particular Nagoya Type 99 Sniper is serial number 9181, placing it in the last 1000 built during the war.  It shows some wear and tear you would expect from a combat used weapon but has a very good look to it overall.  There is a lot of original factory blue finish showing on some of the metal parts, and the overall look shows a pretty even gray/blue patina with most of the finish wear showing in the normal areas.  The Mum is 98% intact on this Type 99 Sniper with only one line scratched thru it, most likely done with a bayonet by a soldier in the field.  The bore in this Arisaka is excellent.  It shows no pitting, erosion, or imperfections.  Everything on this Arisaka functions as it was designed to, and it could be taken to the range and fired if the new owner so chooses.  This Type 99 Sniper has all original parts on it, but many of the parts have mis-matched serial numbers.  There really is no telling how this came to be, it could have been that way since it was captured or could have been   The bolt is an original sniper bolt which was factory turned-down and is longer than the standard Type 99 bolt as it should be, but the last 3 digits of the serial number are "293".  The scope is original and correct but is serial numbered to an earlier production sniper on the locking block, serial number "2579".  The scope is in excellent condition overall.  The exterior black finish shows some scratches and handling marks but has a good look to it overall.  The Japanese writing is clean and crisp with the white paint intact in the characters as well as the maker's mark on top of the objective lens.  The scope has it's own independant serial number from NTC Kogaku and it is "13190".  The optics are amazingly clear in this original 4X sniper scope and the ranging reticle is in perfect condition.  The integral mount functions perfectly and locks into place as it was designed to.  If you have been looking for a Arisaka Type 99 Sniper for your collection, here is your chance to get a nice representative example that is all original parts without paying top dollar for an all-matching example.
