EARLY Antique BRITISH Double Action Revolver
Circa 1840 Transition Pepperbox to Single Barrel
Here we present an antique Early British Double Action Percussion Revolver, made circa 1840 in England. This handsomely engraved revolver is representative of the short period between the pepperbox, an early type of percussion revolver on which the cylinder’s chambers were also barrels, and the single barrel revolver as we know it today. The barrel bears British proofs on each of the chambers as well as the bottom of the barrel. The hammer, frame, pommel and trigger guard are nicely scroll engraved. This would have made a stately weapon for self defense in mid-19th Century Britain.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a gray patina. The markings are clear. The grips are in nice shape. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is intermittent. Hammer and trigger are strong while cylinder revolution and timing is not. Nevertheless, a wonderful example of an evolutionary link between pepperboxes and modern revolvers.
