Payment Types Accepted: Credit Card, Certified Check, Money Order Description: MAKER Marked GERMAN Antique Percussion Long Rifle Carved & Engraved “FISCHER & SÖHNE IN MEHLIS” Here we present an antique German Percussion Full Stock Long Rifle, made by Fischer & Söhne in Mehlis, Germany, circa 1840. C.A. Fischer was a gun maker beginning in about 1828. Mehlis is actually one of two towns that joined together to become Zella-Mehlis. Mehlis seems to have been settled as early as the 1200s, and iron ore was being mined as early as the 1400s. The iron was the catalyst for the firearms industry there in the years to come. The Carl Walther Waffenfabrik Company finds its roots there in Zella-Mehlis, with August Theodor Walther marrying into the family of rifle maker Gustav Wilhelm Pistor. His son, Carl Wilhelm Freund Walther, likewise married into a rifle making family and went on to specialize in making hunting and target rifles. Three out of the five of his sons went on to be gun makers, with Fritz Walther especially going on to achieve great success in the German semi-automatic handguns that dominated the market in much of the 20th Century. Walther’s PP, PPK and P38 were extremely successful and influential to our modern firearms. Needless to say, Mehlis has a fine pedigree for firearms made in the Thuringian Forest. This gorgeous .58 caliber rifle features a carved full-length stock with a jaeger-style patchbox; engraved lock, tang, butt plate, trigger guard and bolsters; double set trigger; fine beaded adjustable front sight, adjustable open rear sight, and fine tang peep sight. It also has a provision for a sling. The lock is quite unique in that it features a safety lever that effectively blocks the hammer from striking the nipple when activated. The muzzle is crowned. This is an incredible rifle that was certainly made to shoot long distances accurately. The maker put his mark on the top of the barrel and it reads: “FISCHER & SÖHNE IN MEHLIS”. The mark is inlaid with silver. One of the bolsters on the left side of the rifle is in the form of some fantastical creature. The condition is fine. The iron parts have a dark, even patina. The markings are still legible. The engraving is crisp. The carved, full-length stock is in very good condition, having been repaired a while ago about 17 inches from the muzzle. The bore is fine, deeply rifled and clean. The action is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Not another one found for sale worldwide! Barrel is 35 inches in length. Caliber: .58 percussion Bore is in near fine condition with deep rifling. The action is strong. Overall condition as seen in photos.
