Description:
A rare Confederate Naval Cutlass patterned after the U.S. Model 1841. Although unmarked it is believed a Griswold based on design features of eagle on both sides of pommel and rivet impressions on brass fish scale handle. This cutlass has been examined and verified Confederate by three Civil War sword experts, including the CW dealer it was purchased from. Included is a very rare tin mounted leather scabbard, also Confederate made. Griswold produced swords and cutlasses until the capture of New Orleans early in the war. Some are marked with his name, while others are unmarked. Brass shows  the reddish tint associated with Southern made swords as well as casting flaws. There is a rack number stamped on the hilt. The scabbard is dry and flaking with a diagonal slice on one side, but still functional. Drag is also tin and may be local Confederate replacement . A great addition to your Civil War display and valued below market with the inclusion of the rare scabbard.
