Description:
This is really a cool old vintage match/target rifle. It was constructed using a Springfield Model 1903 receiver, bolt, trigger group, triggerguard and floorplate, mated to a old Winchester Model 1885 Hi-Wall heavy target barrel that was re-chambered from .30-40 Krag to .30-06 Springfield. That barreled action was then fit to a Springfield Model 1922 Walnut stock complete with the original buttplate unique to that rifle and the Springfield NRA Sporter. We know it was a Springfield Model 1922 stock because it does not have the reinforcing pins thru the wood below the action. Because the M1922 was a .22 caliber rifle, Springfield did not think it was neccessary to install the pins for reinforcement. The custom rifle was then fitted with a Lyman receiver-mounted rear peep sight and a Lyman globe-style front sight with removable inserts, in addition to the barrel being drilled and tapped and fitted with Unertl scope blocks. While this custom target rifle is fairly utilitarian in design, it took quite a bit of skill to put this thing together so precisely. It appears to be all-original finishes on all of the parts, and they all have a very attractive and consistent patina to them. The bore in the 28.5" inch heavy profile barrel is excellent, showing nice strong rifling and no pitting or defects. All of the controls are 100% functional and operational. The action on this rifle is very slick but precise, turning into battery without any slop or wiggle. The Springfield 2-stage trigger has been hand-tuned, and breaks like a glass rod with a light pull with no grit or excessive travel. This cool vintage rifle would probably out-shoot many of the modern "target" rifles today! If you have been looking for a unique one-of-a-kind vintage target rifle for your collection this Springfield 1903 based custom would be a great choice. This rifle comes complete with a M1907 U.S.G.I.-style leather sling.
