Description:
SOLD
Burnside Model of 1864 Carbine .54 caliber black powder rifle. This historical, and revolutionary rifle is dated to between 1862 and 1865, and is technically a Fourth Model Type 2 (with the bolt retaining screw on the right side of the receiver), however is often referred to as the Fifth Model. The rifle features the innovative lever operated breech loading mechanism, that allows for easy loading of the .54 caliber Burnside cartridge to be loaded, and when the lever is closed, it creates a seal between the barrel and chamber. At that point, a cap is fitted to the nipple, and the hammer can be cocked and the rifle will fire. This made for a very efficient system that could be loaded very fast by a competent shooter. This particular rifle is in great mechanical condition, with a fully functional lever mechanism and trigger/hammer. The nipple appears to be aftermarket, however it is fitted nicely. The bolt is slightly loose within the action, and some finish blemishes, patina, and other wear is present, however the rifle overall is tight and stable. The bore is mostly shiny with good rifling, with some dark spots towards the breech. This is a very nice, operable example of the Burnside carbine, and could likely be shot safely (after a gunsmiths inspection). Please refer to the photos to further assess the condition of the rifle. Call quick, this won't last very long!
