Production of most civilian firearms stopped dead for war production. The Colt Single Action Army (SAA) production numbers had been woeful since the Great Depression had set in, their machinery for producing this model was badly worn, and when the war started it was pretty much decided that the public was finished with this relic of the great frontier days. Post war there were no plans to revive the SAA, as the world was moving to double action revolvers and Smith and Wesson was on the rise with many new models. Then came television, with the western TV shows and movies, and the public began lusting after “cowboy” guns again. Colt was quick to oblige, with their second generation offering of the famed Colt Single Action Army. Released in 1956 and in continuous production through 1973, the comeback was strong. The serial number range for the Second Gen Colts began at serial number 00001SA, the SA suffix to distinguish the Second Gen serial numbers from the first-generation SAA. This fine Colt, sn9996SA was built during the second year of production and the first year for the popular 4 ¾” barrel in .45 Long Colt, though it seems this serial number is earlier than the release of the shorter barrel model. In addition, it wears vintage ivory grips, worth about $800 in today’s world, and there are the original black hard rubber grips and a set of standing Eagle grips that go along with the gun in the selling price. This gun is tight as new and is perfectly timed. The owner’s father bought the gun in the 1970’s, and it has been shot, but not as much as you might think. It seems the father was a true western film and tv fan and spent hours in front of the television playing quick draw while watching his favorite shows…who can really say that they have never done that??? Anyway, the gun has about 95% barrel blue, about 70% case color, the grips are flawless, screws perfect, excellent bore, all in good order, NO BOX. Priced to sell with the extra grips.
