Description:
J.W. Wilkinsen 20 ga. muzzleloading double made by sword and blade manufacturers to the crown. James Wilkinsen was apprentice to famed English maker Henry Nock. Henry died in 1804 and James Wilkinsen his shop foreman and son in law took over the business producing fine, high quality arms. This 20 ga London double has a set of barrels 28 5/8" in length that are straight w/ no exterior dents and smooth rust free bores. The walnut stock retains the original finish with sharp crisp checkering on the pistol grip. A pistol grip on early English shotguns is unusual as most guns had the traditional straight grip. Pull is 14 1/4" with a 2 1/2" drop at the heel. All the furniture is engraved. The ramrod entry thimble has the English pineapple motif on the tang. The engraved locks function perfectly, with both half cock and full cock notches in good order. A photo shows the ramrod in severe deflection. There is no wood grain shown on this ramrod as this particular ramrod is not wood and flexes like nylon. When this shotgun was manufactured, whaling was still being practiced. High grade shotguns of the day could be ordered with a whale bone ramrod! This unusual ramrod is a Sperm Whale's penis bone! Only one ramrod per Sperm Whale! I have owned this fine shotgun for many years and have displayed this piece as part of my muzzleloading shotgun collection. The whalebone ramrod feature has been a great source of conversation among other collectors. Very few have recognised the whalebone ramrod on this particular gun. This shotgun will grace any fine collection.
