Description:
This is a fantastic example of Colt's last percussion Revolver, the Model 1862 Pocket Police Model.  .36 Caliber with 5 shot cylinder and desirable 6 1/2" Barrel.  These are usually found with 4.5 or 5.5" barrels.  This one is in the 28,000 range which dates its production to 1864 during the Civil War.  By the War's end in 1865, there were only about 30,000 Colt New Police Revolver in circulation that could have seen action during the Civil War.  This is a relatively small number compared to well over 250,000 Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolvers and 150,000+ Model 1851 Navies and an equal number of 1860 Armies.  Nonetheless, these 1862's were used by soldiers during the Civil War in both the Union and Confederate Armies.  The .36 Caliber gave it a distinct advantage over the Model 1849 in .31 Cal and was a little easier to carry and conceal than the larger 1851 Navy in the same Caliber.
This one is in NRA Antique Fine Plus Plus to Excellent Condition showing nearly all of its orignal case colors on the frame and loading lever and 75-80% bright vivid blue remaining on the barrel and cylinder.  Silver on the brass straps is all gone which is normal even on minty examples.  This wasn't the case during peace time in the 1850's but the plating got notoriously thin in the 1860's during the war.  I doubt their silver plating was more than 1 or 2 atoms thick over the brass and probably lasted just long enough to walk down the street from the store when purchased new before the brass started showing.  Hey, a war was going on and Colt must have figured most of their customers (almost all military) weren't going to live long enough to notice or care.  Grips are Very Good Plus to Fine Overall retaining 97% original varnish showing numerous small handling marks.  Solid with nice wood to metal fit.  Action is excellent and barrel locks up tight to frame.  Matching Numbers except wedge which is 1 digit off...ending in a 5 instead of a 6...an honest mistake by a Colt worker in my opinion and not uncommon.  If you're looking for a super strong Colt Perucssion Revolver, this one is priced to move and worthy of being put in a case.  Guys, please don't ask for a better price...this is my best price. I'm making 10%. If its still here in a month, it will be raised to over $3K like the rest of them in this condition.
