Description:
This is  not an 1892 Winchester but its what inspired Winchester to ask John Browning come up with it; it's a Model 1889 Marlin Rifle that was invented by LL Hepburn, formerly of Remington Arms.  This was Marlin's first side eject rifle and if put Winchester on notice that it's toggle linked lever action Model 1873 had some serious competition.  Prior to Marlin entering the lever action market in 1888, all of Winchester's lever action competitors had pretty well either gone out of business, ceased production, or had been or were about to be bought out by Winchester.  This included Spencer, Maynard, Bullard, Colt, and Whitney.  Marlin entered the lever action game late but when Remington went bankrupt in the late 1880's, they made a brilliant move in scooping up LL Hepburn who gave Marlin some of its greatest designs.   The 1889 is the grandfather to all subsequent Marlin lever action side ejectors from the 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, 95, 97, 336, etc.  This example is in 32-20 and marked "32 W" on the top of the barrel. Marlin just didn't have the heart to spell out Winchester or 32 WCF.  It has a standard 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, and crescent buttplate.  Barrel has Hepburn's 1887 and 1889 Patents.  Overall, its in NRA Antique Very Good Condition with the metal turned to a mostly smooth brown patina with traces of original blue in some of the protected areas.  Original sights include the long Marlin Ballard style rear with the standard Rocky Mountain Front German silver blade.  Winchester charged a little extra for theirs.  The wood is in Very Good Condition Overall with no cracks, holes or repairs.  There are a couple of minor blemishes in the form of a gouge on the left side of the wrist and a smaller gouge on the left side of the forend under the rear sight...both fairly minor.  Bore is Very Good and action works on full and half cock notches for the hammer.  No, it's not an 1873 or an 1892 Winchester but a time-proven and under-rated design for about  3/5th of the price.
