Inscribed on the plate “Father at the Great Redan Sept. 8th 1855”. The butt plate has the Russian Imperial Eagle and the tang of the butt plate is marked “No 390” with the crown over “B” stamp. Behind the breech plug tang is a brass oval plate with the insignia of Nicholas 1st. The battle began on June 18th, 1855, and ended September 8th, 1855. The Great Redan was a well enforced earthworks and fort that came under attack by French and British forces. The Russians occupied the Redan and eventually won out. This was part of the Siege of Sevastopol. The inscription is crudely done in longhand but is in our opinion absolutely original. Obviously, a souvenir brought back by a British soldier. A very historic rifle from a very bloody battle. SOLD Antique: Yes |
