Description:

Here l present a lovely .69 caliber 1816 Springfield Contract Flintlock Musket.

History: The M1795 was the very first weapon manufactured by the United States, after the war of 1812, they continued to improve on the design, and what became known as the Model 1816 was born. The easiest way to distinguish a mode 1816 ls the brass pan, forward facing barrel band springs, and straighter “non-comb like” stock. This musket was very similar to the French Charleville m1777, as we grew fond of them from the Revolutionary War. This weapon would have been common ln the Texas Revolution with Alamo defenders, onto the Mexican-American War, and throughout the Texas-Indian Wars & American Indian Wars

The lock reads “U.S. / M.T. WICKHAM” in an arch in front of the cock and vertical “PHILLA / 1828” behind the cock. Barrel plug has matching 1828. Barrel is marked “LS/US” above sunken “P”. The markings remain clean and visible and the arm appears to be original flint in every respect. The lock is mechanically fine with strong springs. Buttplate has “US”. Proper button tip ramrod. Both sling swivels. Present left flat cartouche. A very good Wickham 1816 Contract musket.

Condition: The metal surfaces are an oxidized brown with gray undertones along the barrel and triggerguard, more moderate on the buttplate. The walnut stock rates very good overall with only slightly rounded edges, ample dents, chips, drying cracks and handling marks from the years and a small ''8'' in front of the buttplate tang. No major signs of damage or repair that would need to be noted.
