Description:
English Railgun Swival Blunderbuss   Circa 1779

The octagonal breech of this impressive heavy railgun swival blunderbuss is engraved “LY2538” Irish registration number with “L” for Limerick County. It illustrates a popular pattern being produced for merchant ships and commercial sources during the 1700’s. Notice the turned brass form. A rounded military type lock however, includes a plain upper post on its cock (that is, not notched) that did not receive government authorization until the 1790’s. A sheet-brass plate is held by a flat screw at the back plus a second through it’s shorts upper tang, which is also stamped  “LY2538”, The hefty walnut buttstock, in turn imitates the accepted land pattern profile although thicker proportions. Birmingham British  proofmarks.

This is a very rare blunderbuss. These were often fitted with swivals to facilitate use on warships, the swivals were sometimes fitted by drilling a hole in the stock (see example: Battle Weapons of the Revolutionary War by Newman, P. 191) or by a fitted metal collar around the barrel and stock. (See a similar gun currently offered for sale at ima-usa/british-naval-brass-barrel-blunderbuss-swival -gun-circa-1775.html for a useful compairison and information).
