Springfield Model 1873/79 U.S. Trapdoor Carbine 16-47
Springfield Model 1873/79 U.S Trapdoor Carbine barrel length 22”. Blued finish with casehardened breechblock and tang. Serial #181494* lock markings of eagle and US/SPRINGFIELD forward of hammer. Breechblock markings US/MODEL/ 1873. It is noted that in order to deplete old stock of “MODEL 1873” marked breech blocks, Springfield Armory used them on earliest production, in assembly of this model 1879, which makes for some confusion in the identification. See Flaydermans explanation of the various model designations page 584. A feature of the model 1879 is the long range rear sight; leaf style adjustable for windage and elevation, marked “C” on side.
Condition: VG. Bore needs to be cleaned, with 40-50-% rifling, some wear and corrosion, lock has some blue and a little corrosion, BBL and sight have a dark blue/brown color with some patina. Breech block and tang are fairly clean. Stock has the usual dents, dings, discolored spots, etc. very good condition overall. (16-47) $1,350.00
