The M1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt's factory manager and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. The 1878 Frontier was a much larger and more reliable version of the Model 1877 Lightning and Thunderer, Colt’s first double action revolver. The 1878 Frontier also offered a much more comprehensive array of calibers, compared to the 1877’s three offerings. Despite all of this, the Model 1877 was clearly the popular favorite as over 166,000 were produced versus 51,210 of the 1878. This gun is one of only 970 Model 1878 revolvers having been chambered for the .32-20 WCF cartridge. The factory letter confirms it was the sole gun of this type in a shipment to Baker & Hamilton in San Francisco on February 21, 1905, in the current configuration. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The side is marked “32 W.C.F.”. The overall condition is very good. The original blue finish is about 50%. The markings are clear. The Colt trademarked hard rubber grips are in great shape. The bore is in very good condition, clean with strong rifling. The action is excellent. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 4-3/4 inches. Caliber: .32-20 WCF Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING.
