Antique MOORE & WOODWARD British PERCUSSION Pistol
Beautifully Engraved Pistol Manufactured Circa Mid-19th Century
Here we present an antique Moore & Woodward Percussion Pistol, made circa mid-19th century in London, England. Charles Moore is recorded as owning a gun business in the city of London at 64 St.; James Street, in 1821 at 2 Regent Circus, later re-names Piccadilly Circus. After 8 years in the gun-making business, Moore was appointed “Furbisher” (Repairer of Guns) to St. James’ Palace and Hampton Court. In 1836 he was appointed “Gunmaker-in-Ordinary to King William IV. In 1843, he entered into a partnership with James Woodward, who began his gun-making career as an apprentice to Charles Moore in 1827 and rose to be the head finisher prior to becoming Moore’s partner. This partnership established the business “Moore and Woodward”. This business stayed active from 1843 through 1872.
The overall condition is fine. Case colors and Damascened pattern are strong. The markings are clear. The hand-checkered walnut grip is in fine shape. The smooth bore is in good shape. The action is excellent, strong and crisp.
